HOW R MADHAVAN MANAGES HIS STRESS: ‘10,000 GURUS ARE TELLING YOU 20,000 WAYS TO LIVE YOUR LIFE…’

R Madhavan has shared his tips on how to deal with stress -- whether you're a Gen Z or Gen X. In the second episode of Power Breakfast with Curly Tales, the charismatic actor delved into his healthy lifestyle and how he ensures his stress meter doesn't bust amidst a demanding schedule.

Madhavan acknowledged that he isn't a qualified doctor or an educator, and said these tips are based on his life and research.

"The moment you open social media in the morning; 10,000 gurus are telling you 20,000 ways to live your life. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry's mother and dog is running a line on how to live your life and what is wrong with it. And they're all wrong because their conditioning is not the same as yours. You and I could be both South Indians but we could have been born in different parts of the world, with a different set of rules that makes us very different. So, what I take stress on can be very different from what you take stress on," said Madhavan in the video.

These are his tips on how to deal with the stress in life.

Box Breathing: Your Built-in Calming Mechanism

The first tip Madhavan introduces us to is box breathing. According to Dr Neerja Agarwal, psychologist and co-founder of Emoneeds, it is a powerful technique that utilises your breath to regulate your nervous system and combat stress.

It's simple: inhale for a specific count, hold your breath, exhale for the same count, and hold again before repeating the cycle. This rhythmic breathing pattern promotes relaxation and helps quiet a racing mind.

Hope: The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Madhavan emphasised the importance of hope during challenging times. Arouba Kabir, emotional & mental health professional and founder of Enso Wellness, said remembering that difficulties are temporary and a brighter future awaits can be a powerful motivator.

Think of it like the natural rhythm of day and night. Even the darkest night eventually gives way to sunrise. Maintaining a hopeful outlook can empower you to keep pushing forward.

Shift Your Focus: The Power of Pets and Kindness

Engaging with activities that pull you away from worries and into the present moment can significantly reduce stress, recommended Madhavan. Dr Agarwal agreed, suggesting spending time with pets as a wonderful option. Playing with a furry friend not only takes your mind off anxieties but also fosters the release of oxytocin, a hormone known for its calming effects.

Kabir builds on this concept by highlighting the stress-reducing power of random acts of kindness. Performing actions for the benefit of others, without expecting anything in return, triggers the release of oxytocin, promoting relaxation and fostering a sense of well-being.
